How many of your babies don’t die?

After two miscarriages and a difficult third pregnancy, in June 2000 my twin daughters were born.

Rather than breathing a sigh of relief, however, I was faced two days later with the news that one of my babies was born with a serious heart defect and would need open heart surgery to survive.

I told my story live on stage this year at Story Collider – a podcast and live show where people tell stories about science. I’m no scientist, but I delve into what goes through a new mother’s mind when the most important decision she’ll make is choosing the right heart surgeon to save her child.

The story went live on Story Collider’s podcast today. You can listen to it here.
